He was 33 years old. Now, the Forrest Gump star shares tear-jerking details about his son\u2019s final days in life.\n
Gary Sinise, who has helped so many veterans regain harmony in their lives, truly deserves to live in peace and joy.\n
However, the acclaimed actor has recently endured profound personal pain.\n
Two months ago, we were hit by the heartbreaking news of McCanna \u201cMac\u201d Sinise\u2019s passing, after many years battling cancer.\n
But it is only now that his father, Gary Sinise, is opening up in detail about his son\u2019s final days. In an interview with ET, Gary shares how his son gracefully navigated through the last difficult moments of his life.\n
To start with, Gary revealed that his son actually completed a music album he had been working on for the past few years. \u201cI bought him his first drum set when he was 9 years old,\u201d Gary recalled in a conversation with ET.\n

\u201dHe played through high school, and then he went to USC Thornton School of Music. He was playing drums all through college and studying songwriting and composition. He created a bunch of pieces of music while he was at college.\u201d\n
But during the last years of his life, Mac just put them away and didn\u2019t do anything with them. In January 2023, he said, \u201dDad, I think I want to try to finish this music that I worked on all those years ago in college.\u201d\n
Just like his father, Mac was a very skilled and talented musician. He learned to play the harmonica while undergoing cancer treatment. Mac recorded the final parts of his album during his last week in life, and his album is currently being finalized. It will be available for purchase on the Gary Sinise Foundation website. Additionally, it will be streamable for those who wish to listen to it.\n
Gary reminisces about the day when Mac had a viewing party. Sadly, it would become a kind of farewell.\n
\u201dIt was a joyful day. The following night, I went on television and talked about Mac. Then the next day, I had to call the ambulance and take him to the hospital,\u201d Gary shares.\n
But Mac needing to go to the hospital was quite common. He would often spend a few days there, stabilize, and then be able to come home. The family thought that would be the case on this day as well \u2013 but they were mistaken. At the hospital, doctors realized the situation was extremely serious, and soon it dawned on the Sinise family that Mac was probably in his last days of life.\n
Many might think that everything was pitch black in this situation \u2013 but Gary points out that Mac found peace in knowing he had done everything he wanted in life.\n
Sure, there were dark moments, but Mac was a true fighter all the way.\n
\u201dHe was at peace. He was happy at the end of his life. He was joyful\u2026 He was smiling,\u201d Gary says.\n

In the interview with ET, Gary also revealed a wonderful, heartwarming story about his son. Gary was present during Mac\u2019s last hours of life, but sometimes he needed to take a break and leave his son\u2019s hospital bed.\n
It was during one of these moments that this little story unfolded.\n
\u201dI was staying with him at the hospital at the end\u2026 I had to step out for something at one point, and I stopped by the nurse\u2019s station on the way in. I said, \u2018How\u2019s Mac doing? What\u2019s he\u2019s doing?\u2019 [The nurse said], \u2018He\u2019s watching \u201cForrest Gump\u201d on his phone.\u2019 He was in there watching \u2018Forrest Gump.\u2019 It made him feel good. I think it made him feel closer to me sometimes. He would watch it when I was gone,\u201d Gary shared.\n

Mac had started to experience notable pain in his tailbone.At first, he ignored the pain, but eventually he felt compelled to see a doctor. Unfortunately, a massive tumor was discovered on his sacrum, a bone in the lower back. Doctors managed to remove the tumor, but the cancer returned in 2019. The situation worsened, and Mac experienced severe pain during certain periods.\n
\u201dIt was not going to get better. There\u2019s no cure,\u201d Gary shared and added:\n
\u201dWe tried 25 different drugs. These are just drugs that are used on other cancers and the doctors kept trying and they said, \u2018As long as you want to keep trying, Mac, we\u2019ll keep trying. We\u2019ll come up with something.\u2019 Mac said, \u2018I want to keep trying.\u2019 He was an incredible fighter.\u201d\n
Eventually, Mac became paralyzed by his illness. He stopped feeling anything from his chest downwards and was unable to walk.\n
\u201dIt\u2019s just the nature of this awful cancer. He was fighting and I wasn\u2019t going to stop fighting for him. I never wanted to think that we were going to lose the battle even though you know that you\u2019re fighting uphill all the way.\u201d\n
Gary Sinise has repeatedly shared his son\u2019s story, hoping to raise awareness of this terrible form of cancer. Sharing Mac\u2019s story is also a way to keep his memory alive \u2013 he was not just a cancer patient but also an incredible and inspiring individual, it seems.\n
No one should have to pass away at the age of 33, and Gary still finds it hard to believe that his son is no longer by his side.\n
\u201dIt\u2019s hard to even think like that, because somehow it feels like he\u2019s just on vacation, he\u2019s gonna come back.\u201d\n
In 2021, Gary Sinise and his family made a huge life change, leaving behind their longtime home in California for a fresh start in Nashville, Tennessee. After years in Hollywood, they felt it was time for something new, and Nashville, with its friendly vibe and rich culture, seemed like the perfect fit.\n
Fast forward to September 2024, Gary shared how much he loves his new home. In an interview, when asked how Tennessee was treating him, he didn\u2019t hold back: \u201cI\u2019m glad to be here. I love it. I love the state.\u201d\n
The move hasn\u2019t just been about enjoying a new pace of life \u2014 it\u2019s also given Gary more room to focus on his passion projects, like his incredible work with the Gary Sinise Foundation, which supports veterans and their families.\n
